Online Couples Therapy in CA, CT, NJ & NY

Online Couples Counseling with an Attachment Lens

When the same argument keeps coming back, the pattern is the problem, not your partner.

I'm Risha London Nathan, LCSW, trained in both PACT and the Gottman Method. Online couples counseling with me looks at what actually happens between you - the patterns, the triggers, the moments that go sideways - and helps you build communication and repair that hold under stress. Sessions are online for couples in California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

What Is Online Couples Counseling?

Online couples counseling is structured work with a licensed therapist to change the patterns between partners: how you communicate, how conflict escalates, and how you find your way back to each other. Virtual sessions work the same way in-person ones do, from wherever you both are.

Married, engaged or long-term partners are all welcome. Online marriage counseling follows the same approach: it's the relationship we work on, not the label.

How to repair after a fight

Two Approaches, One Practice

Two Research-Based Approaches: Gottman and PACT

I'm trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level 1) and in PACT, the Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (Level 1). They complement each other: Gottman brings decades of research on what makes relationships last, and PACT brings the attachment and nervous system lens to what happens between you in real time.

Gottman Method PACT
What it is A research-based method built on decades of studying what makes relationships last. The Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy: attachment plus the nervous system, in real time.
Focus Friendship, conflict management, trust, shared meaning. Attachment styles, survival responses, secure functioning as a pair.
Sessions feel like Structured: assessments, skills practice, clear frameworks for hard conversations. Experiential: working with what happens between you live in the session.
Especially useful for Communication skills, recurring arguments, rebuilding trust. Couples stuck in fast, reactive cycles they can't talk their way out of.
In our work I blend both: Gottman structure for skills and repair, PACT awareness for what your bodies are doing while you talk.

Signature Focus

Attachment-Based Couples Therapy

Underneath most recurring conflict are two attachment systems doing their best to feel safe. Attachment-based couples therapy helps you see each other's patterns - anxious, avoidant, or a mix - without blame, and practice responses that build secure functioning.

If you recognize yourself in an anxious pattern, my guide to anxious attachment in relationships is a good place to start. Working on your own pattern first? Attachment-based therapy for individuals is available online too.

Getting Started Is Simple

How Virtual Couples Therapy Works

1

Book a free consult

Both partners join a short call so you can each ask questions and see how I work.

2

Your first sessions

I get to know you as a couple and as individuals: your history, your pattern, and what you each want to change.

3

Ongoing sessions

Weekly online sessions where we work with real moments as they happen, not just talk about them afterward.

Research on virtual couples therapy shows outcomes comparable to in-person work. What matters is showing up consistently, and online sessions make that easier for two busy schedules.

Good to Know

Online Couples Counseling FAQs

What should we expect in couples therapy?

In the first sessions I get to know you as a couple and as individuals: your history, your patterns, and what you each want to change. From there, sessions are active. We work with real moments as they happen, practice new ways of communicating, and track what shifts between sessions.

Is online marriage counseling the same as couples counseling?

Yes. Marriage counseling, couples counseling and couples therapy describe the same work: helping two partners change what's happening between them. You don't need to be married to come.

What if my partner is unsure about therapy?

That's common. A free consult is a low-pressure way to meet me and ask questions before committing to anything. Reluctant partners often settle in once they see the work is practical, not about blame.

Do you take insurance for couples therapy?

I'm an out-of-network provider and can provide superbills for possible reimbursement, depending on your plan.

Which states do you see couples in?

I see couples online in California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
