Online Family Therapy for Adult Families
The patterns between you can change, even after decades.
Family patterns run deep: how you communicate, the roles each person plays, who takes care of whom. I'm Risha London Nathan, LCSW, and I work with adult families online - most often adult children with a parent, or adult siblings - who want to relate to each other differently. Sessions are online in California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

What Is Family Therapy?
Family therapy is sessions with two or more family members and a licensed therapist, working on the patterns between you rather than on any one person. It helps families communicate more clearly, understand each other's reactions, and shift dynamics that may have been in place for decades.
Online family counseling has a practical advantage here: everyone joins from where they are, which makes it workable for families spread across different cities.

Adult children navigating care for aging parents, and dividing responsibility without resentment.
Understanding ambiguous griefRepair Across Generations
Naming old hurts honestly and finding a way to be family now, as adults.
How repair worksMy Focus
Family Therapy for Adults
Most of my family work is with adults: grown children and a parent working through long-standing distance, or siblings renegotiating how they share responsibility for the family. Whole-family sessions with teens are less common in my practice; if that's what you need, I'm glad to point you toward the right fit in a consult.
I bring the same whole-person approach as the rest of my practice: attachment-based, systems-aware and grounded in the nervous system. When conversations get heated, we slow down and work with what's happening in the room, so new patterns get practiced rather than just discussed.
Working on your part of the pattern individually? See individual therapy. Two partners rather than a family? Couples counseling is the better fit. Still carrying hurt from how you grew up? Relational trauma therapy goes deeper there.

Good to Know
Online Family Therapy FAQs
Who attends family therapy sessions?
Whoever the work is about: most often an adult child and a parent, or adult siblings. We can also alternate between joint sessions and individual check-ins where useful.
Does online family counseling work if we live in different places?
Yes, and it's one of the reasons families choose online work: everyone joins from where they are, as long as each participant is in a state where I'm licensed at the time of the session.
Do you take insurance?
I'm an out-of-network provider. I can provide superbills you can submit for possible reimbursement, depending on your plan.
What if one family member won't join?
We start with who's willing. Change in one part of a family system tends to move the rest, and the door stays open.
