What Is Life Transitions Therapy?
Life transitions therapy is support for the stretch between the life you had and the one that is taking shape. Transitions ask you to let go of routines, roles and expectations, often before you have had time to grieve them or picture what comes next.
That in-between can show up as worry, irritability, poor sleep, tension or feeling disconnected from the people closest to you. Together, we slow it down, name what is actually hard, and build the tools and relationships that help you adjust at your own pace.

The Transitions I See Most Often
Spotlight: Having Kids
Therapy for New Parents: Staying Connected After Kids
Having kids is one of the biggest transitions a relationship goes through. Many couples tell me they feel more like co-workers than partners: disconnected, running on too little sleep, and arguing about who is carrying what at home.
What often comes up:
- Disconnection and mismatched expectations about what life with a baby would look like
- Communication problems, especially if the foundation felt shaky before kids
- Conflict over the division of labor, the visible work and the invisible kind
- Exhaustion, and figuring out how to care for each other while caring for a child
- Parenting styles you didn't know you had until your own family of origin showed up in the moment
In our work, we protect time for the relationship outside of kid time, keep building communication skills, and use shared schedules to name needs and manage expectations. Repair doesn't always mean being on the same page. More often it means working to understand each other. A relationship changes when kids arrive, and that change is normal.

Grief Counseling After a Loss or a Breakup
Grief follows the death of someone you love, and it follows a breakup too. One of the hardest parts is the expectation that you should be over it by now. Grief rarely keeps to a timeline, and for many people it never fully goes away.
Grief also isn't linear. Rather than moving neatly through stages, it tends to come in waves. It's common to intellectualize the pain, or to replay what happened over and over, especially when you only have part of the story.
Moving forward doesn't have to mean being over the person. It might mean you are still grieving and still open to new connections, or that you stop avoiding people and let yourself be sad around them. In breakup therapy and grief counseling, we work on:
- Letting go of a fixed timeline for how you "should" feel
- Meeting your own reactions with compassion instead of judgment
- Putting a limit on rumination, then turning to a regulation tool, a friend or your community

The Person Behind the Practice
Meet Risha, Your Life Transitions Therapist
Hi, I'm Risha London Nathan, a Licensed Psychotherapist and Certified Holistic Health Coach. Big changes show up in sleep, appetite, energy and tension as much as in our thoughts, so I pay attention to both.
I work with individuals and couples online, drawing on attachment-based therapy and practical, everyday tools. When a change stirs up older hurts from how you grew up, relational trauma therapy goes deeper there. You don't need to have it all figured out before we start.

Life Transitions Counseling FAQs
What is life transitions counseling?
Life transitions counseling is therapy for the period around a major change, such as having a baby, moving, changing jobs, losing a loved one, a breakup or caring for aging parents. It helps you process what you are leaving behind and adjust to what comes next.
Do I need therapy for a change I chose?
Wanted changes can still be hard. A new baby or a new job often brings loss, stress and conflict alongside the good parts. Therapy gives that mix a place to go.
Can we come as a couple after having kids?
Yes. Many couples come in the first years after having kids to reconnect, share the load more fairly and communicate better while tired.
Is breakup therapy the same as grief counseling?
A breakup is a real loss, and it often brings the same waves of grief as a death. We use a similar approach: realistic expectations, compassion for your reactions and limits on rumination.
Do you offer life transitions therapy online?
Yes. Sessions are fully online for clients in California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
Do you take insurance?
I work out-of-network and provide superbills you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
